Super League: UEFA can’t stop semi-finals, ban players from World Cup – Real Madrid Chief, Perez

Real Madrid President, Florentino Perez has waved aside any possibility of UEFA imposing sanctions on the 12 clubs in the European Super League.

Tottenham, Chelsea, Arsenal, Manchester City, Liverpool and Manchester United alongwith Real Madrid, Barcelona, Atletico Madrid and Juventus, AC Milan and Inter Milan had on Sunday evening, announced a breakaway from UEFA.

They set up a new competition to rival the Champions League and Europa League with none of the founding members able to be relegated and just five ‘open’ slots for other clubs.

UEFA had warned that any player from the Super League would be banned from playing international games, insisting that FIFA is also against the new league.

However, Real Madrid chief, Perez, who is appointed as the first Chairman of the European Super League, rubbished suggestions that UEFA can punish the 12 clubs

“Every player can be calm because that’s not going to happen. They won’t be banned if they join the Super League,” Perez told Spanish TV station El Chiringuito on Monday night.

He also refuted suggestions that clubs such as Chelsea, Real Madrid, Manchester United, Manchester City and Arsenal, who are in the semi-finals of the Champions League and Europa League this season could be booted out of the competitions or their domestic leagues.

“Real Madrid, Manchester City and Chelsea will not be banned from the Champions League or domestic leagues. Impossible. I can assure you of that, 100%,” he added.

“It won’t happen, the law protects us. This is impossible.”
