The Electoral Chairman of the Students’ Union election, Prof. Dosu Malomo, has suspended the campaign of the Students’ Union aspirants.
This was made known in a WhatsApp broadcast signed by Prof. Malomo who also doubles as the Dean of Students Affairs, on Wednesday, 23rd of June 2021.
This was as a result of a “clash between supporters of two aspirants at Ikole campus during the campaign for the next SUG executive members election.”
Sequel to the conflict between the supporters, the election campaign which began on Tuesday 15th of June, 2021 has been suspended until further notice by the chairman.
“All aspirants are to note that the campaign has been suspended immediately until further notice. Aspirants are to also note that they should not come with their supporters to the meeting,” the memo reads.
The Electoral Committee has thereby requested all members of the Committee, the University Chief Security Officer, Medical Director, and all aspirants to attend an emergency meeting which is scheduled for Thursday, 24th of June 2021 at Student Affairs Division by 11:00 am.
The said clash occurred between the supporters of Odetunde Oluwaseun, also known as Winsome and Ogunmiluyi Adeoluwayemi, also known as Yemi
Teller. Both aspirants are from Faculty of Social Sciences and Faculty of Management Sciences respectively.
Adebowale Alao, also known as Debo, a 300 level student of Political Science and supporter of Odetunde Oluwaseun spoke with UCJ FUOYE.
“I and Odekunle were not there when it started. We had intention to campaign in Oye, but we wanted to avoid clash of campaign since we heard Teslim wanted to campaign in Oye,” he began.
“The Ikole campus security members instructed the supporters to await the presence of Odetunde before they could gain access to the school premises.
“We actually saw Yemi Teller guys in School Junction, Oye-Ekiti, but we didn’t know they were going to Ikole. On our way to Ikole, I received a call. They said some Yemi Teller guys broke bottles and scattered everywhere.
“In their explanation, I got to know that they were actually angry with a particular student who is actually a Management Sciences’ student supporting Odetunde. They saw her standing physically with our people. I guess that is what triggered their anger.”
He also reiterated that he was not there. “That was the information given to me. When we decided to campaign after we resolved the issue, Faculty of Sciences arrived. We later had to do our campaign in Oye campus,” he clarified.
Ogunmiluyi Adeoluwayemi, an aspirant for the Presidency seat, from the Faculty of Management Sciences, while speaking to UCJ FUOYE said, “what happened is that I got report my opposition wanted to campaign in my faculty. I wasn’t really bothered about that since my initial plan was to campaign in Ikole.”
Ogunmiluyi Adeoluwayemi went further to say that, on Monday, his campaign was disrupted in the Faculty of Social Sciences by his opposition. “Two of my loyalists were assaulted,” he claimed.
“I also heard they had changed their plans and they are heading to Ikole for their campaign. I asked someone and he said they had left for Ikole at about 9:17am. My convoy of about 4 vehicles went to Ikole at 12:00pm, so the opposition would have been done with their campaign.
“The first bus that arrived had my banner and my banner was removed. That person who removed my banner was campaigning for Winsome.”
As of the time of filing this report, the election timetable and guidelines remain the same.
The reading of manifestos remains slated for the 1st of July, 2021 while the Election Date is still scheduled for Friday, 2nd of July, 2021.
